Over 90 young people, their teachers and university undergraduates joined us for our annual invitation to Beat the Rat race at Newcastle University. Pupils from across the North East region grilled business people who use languages in the workplace.

Pupils’ comments included :

• ‘It was very enlightening’
• ‘So interesting to hear from real-life linguists’
• ‘Very interesting to hear how languages are used in everyday life’
• ‘It showed the opportunities we can have’
• ‘Very interesting to see how languages can be used for different jobs’
• ‘It was fun and entertaining. Also I learned that languages can help you massively in life’
