European Day of Languages 2019 final

Annual competition for schools in the UK
organised in North-East England
A magical trip
ALLNE and partners are once again organising the annual European Day of Languages Competition for Schools and in 2019 it is again open to anyone!
We were delighted with response from around the country in last year’s competition – A recipe (for happiness) – work was of high quality, and we are already looking forward to the entries this year!
The organising committee invites language learners in any key stage to create a piece of text in a language they are learning on the theme:
A magical trip
We think that younger language learners might focus on the idea of planning a trip, maybe with an itinerary, a packing list or a phrase book, while older students might invent a narrative, a diary or a plan. The trip could be in our world or an entirely imaginary one! There will be prizes!
Our plan : take a good idea, mix in the ideas of language learners around the country; and make some great memories!
The idea of a trip could be framed in the general context of problem-solving, and lends itself to supporting a range of other aims – writing lists, using different verb-forms, researching travel arrangements.
The text must include words in a language or languages other than English, and could include imagery relating to the concept. Presentation is important, but judges will look principally at the language in the text, rather than the quality of any images.
No entry can be larger than a sheet of A4 paper.
Pupils should write their name, age, language used, class, teacher and school on the back of their entry. Please give teacher contact details on the pro forma below for your bundle of entries so that we can contact winners.
We reserve the right to use winning entries for display or promotional purposes and potentially for publication (including online), and will inform you accordingly through newsletters or e-bulletins. Please note that entries cannot be returned.
Entries are to be sent to: EDoL Competition, c/o René Koglbauer, Network for Languages, School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, King George VI Building, Newcastle University, NE1 7RU.
The intention is that this might form an activity in your school around the European Day of Languages itself (Thursday, 26th September), so the deadline for submission of entries will be: Monday, 7th October 2019.

Vouchers will be offered to the winners; there will be one winner for each key stage, up to and including KS5. Further prizes may also be awarded at the judges’ discretion. In the event of insufficient entries of good quality in any specific key stage no prize will be awarded; the judges’ decision is final.
